If you have stumbled across this site, your first question may be “What is Vector Land Class?” In a nutshell this is a high fidelity landclass and environment upgrade for Microsoft’s Flight Simulator 10 (FSX).

Scenery? What is wrong with the default data?

Microsoft Flight Simulator 10 (FSX) 'out of the box' includes data to simulate the whole world, including New Zealand, but given the enormous task of compiling this, most parts of the world are not as accurate as they could be. New Zealand is one of the areas in FSX that is rendered incorrectly due to errors in the standard landclass data: Towns are missing, large areas of vegetation are incorrect and parts of the country are rendered as a desert. The standard water class isn't much better with large tidal estuaries and inlets, which in reality are brown, shallow and muddy, appearing as clean and deep. Microsoft did a good job given the enormity of the task, but flying over New Zealand in FSX is vastly different to flying over it in real life.

What is wrong with the default landclass rendering?

Default

The default method of presenting changes in landcover in Flightsim is to use a low resolution georeferenced raster/pixel image where each pixel represents a different type of vegetation or land cover. While this method results in small file sizes, it has the unfortunate side effect of limiting accuracy of landclass transitions to over 1.2km.

This means boundaries of forests and towns blend into each other over large distances or get completely missed out.

The real world is not often like that. Forests stop at the boundary of the property; Harvested forest is dissected neatly by stand; Farms stop at the edge of a road; Towns are constrained by natural features such as waterways and hills.

There maybe other landclass addons out there.....but all suffer from the same problem. Traditional landclass rendering locks up the potential that is inherent in the FSX display engine and reduces immersion when you fly over it.

VLC- A new approach to landclass data

Vector Land Class approaches the problem with a new and innovative approach: We are able to compile selected elements of landclass information in a way that gets around this limtation and maintains the full spatial accuracy of the source data.

Our approach results in over 20 times better accuracy than traditional methods: Every boundary, road and object in our addon should be closer than 50 metres of its actual location!

If a forest stops at the boundary of a road in real life, it will do the same in VLC enhanced FSX.

If a town boundary is stopped by a river or stream, it will do the same in VLC enhanced FSX.

Beaches will be accurately placed in the many small bays around the country and small changes in landuse such as orchards, mines, swamps and forest clearings will realistically recreated.

Vector Land Class unlocks the potential in your copy of FSX and creates a highly accurate and realistic rendering of New Zealand. Some of these features may be a world first and we're proud that we can show our country in all its beautiful splendour.

However, Vector Land Class is more than just a landclass replacement. Use the Features menu to discover what else is included in this package.
